Large-scale strikes will take place Monday in Germany's largest cities, during which public transport will be suspended, the Ver.di trade union said in a statement.

Accordingly, public transport services will be completely suspended in Berlin, Hamburg, and Bremen. Public transport will be suspended also in practically all major cities in North Rhine-Westphalia, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Brandenburg states. Lower Saxony will be the only state that will not be affected by these strikes.

The aforesaid trade union is trying to put pressure on employers in all 16 German federal states, in particular by demanding a reduction in total weekly working hours and shift lengths. The trade union’s members are demanding also longer rest breaks and higher bonuses for night shifts and weekends.

About 100,000 workers from 150 public transport companies in Germany are expected to take part in the strike.
