Moscow demands that Berlin provide consular access for Russian citizen Suren Avajyan who is detained in Germany, Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesperson Maria Zakharova told a press briefing Friday.

Suren Avajyan was arrested in Germany on January 21. The arrest was made in connection with the delivery of humanitarian aid and other goods, including clothing and medicine, to Donbas.

The Office of the Federal Public Prosecutor General of Germany claims that the aforesaid Russian citizen of Armenian origin is accused of assisting "foreign terrorist organizations," among which the German authorities have included the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic. Moscow, however, considers this classification unacceptable and without legal force.

Maria Zakharova noted that the Russian side has sent official notes demanding to clarify who made this decision and on what basis. In addition, Moscow has demanded to provide immediate consular access to the aforementioned detainee.

The Russian MFA has stated that the situation is under the close attention of the Russian authorities.
